Founded in 1988, Hot Topic started as an alternative to mainstream apparel retailers. Malls were filled stores that offered a variety of styles, but none offered apparel for die-hard music fans. Hot Topic became the main retailer for band T-shirts, a must-have for the counterculture music fan base. As Hot Topic’s brand grew, it became known that customers were fans of the underground pop culture scene (comic books, cult movies and TV shows, etc.). So in addition to “band tees,” Hot Topic later began to offer merchandise to fans of Marvel and DC super heroes, South Park, Care Bears and other pop culture names that were not a priority of mainstream retailers. In addition to T-shirts and other clothing, Hot Topic has become a retailer for action figures, posters, statues and other collectibles. Today, you can still find original band tees and pop culture paraphernalia in over 600 Hot Topic locations nationwide.
